Bernardo Silva Becomes Real Madrid's Oldest Foreign Champions League Scorer

Bernardo Silva became the oldest foreign player to score a Champions League goal for Real Madrid when he opened the scoring in Wednesday's 4-1 win over RB Leipzig, according to LiveScore. The Portuguese midfielder found the net in the third round of the league phase, marking his first goal in the competition since joining the Spanish club.

At 32 years and 72 days, Silva surpassed the previous record held by Ruud van Nistelrooy, who was 30 years and 87 days old when he scored his first European goal for Real Madrid against Dynamo Kyiv in September 2006. The figures were compiled by Opta and reported by LiveScore.

The goal was not Silva's only entry into the record books on the night. Spanish statistician MisterChip noted that Silva also became the fifth player to score for Real Madrid in the Champions League after having previously scored against the club while playing for another team.

Why it matters

The two records place Silva in unusual company. The age mark had stood for two decades, and the list of players who have scored on both sides of a Real Madrid Champions League fixture is short enough to be named in full. For a player in his early thirties, the achievement underlines how late Silva's move to the Spanish capital came and how quickly he has made an impact in Europe's top club competition.

The result itself also mattered: Silva's opener set Real Madrid on course for a comfortable home victory in the league phase, keeping the club's campaign on track.

The five-player list Silva joined

According to MisterChip's count, as reported by LiveScore, Silva is now part of a group of five footballers who scored against Real Madrid in the Champions League before later scoring for the club.

Van Nistelrooy did it during his time at Manchester United, and David Beckham, another former United player, followed the same path. Álvaro Morata scored against Real Madrid while at Juventus. Kylian Mbappé did so in a Paris Saint-Germain shirt, and Antonio Rüdiger achieved it with Chelsea. Silva completes the set, having scored against Real Madrid during his spell at Manchester City.

The common thread is a career that passed through a major European rival before ending, or pausing, in Madrid. Each of the named players arrived at the club with a Champions League record that already included a goal against it.

Van Nistelrooy's mark falls

The record Silva broke had belonged to Van Nistelrooy since 2006, when the Dutch striker scored against Dynamo Kyiv at the age of 30 years and 87 days. That goal came in his first Champions League season with Real Madrid after his move from Manchester United.

Silva's goal against Leipzig came more than two years later in life than Van Nistelrooy's did, reflecting a broader trend of players moving to top clubs at a later stage of their careers. The previous record had stood through nearly 20 Champions League campaigns.

LiveScore reported the milestone alongside video of the goal, which opened the scoring on Wednesday evening.

What to watch

Silva's place in the record books is secure for now, but the age mark is the kind that tends to fall as squads grow older and clubs increasingly sign established players in their thirties. Whether the five-player list grows depends on how many footballers follow the same path from scoring against Real Madrid to scoring for it.
